On April 30, Sisters of Code conducted a successful event at IT Academy STEP Cambodia to celebrate Girls in ICT Day 2022.
International Girls in ICT Day is established by ITU (The International Telecommunication Union is a specialised agency of the United Nations) and celebrated in over 150 countries around the world, to promote girls and young women involvement in IT. This event took place in Cambodia for the first time!
During this event, students have shared their ideas of what could girls with ICT skills be able to achieve, and have discussed challenges they face and how they overcome those. The event was attended by students from IT Academy STEP Cambodia, Royal University of Phnom Penh, Norton University, and Cambodian Academy of Digital Technologies, as well as some high school girls who joined the event.
Sisters of Code teachers have also created an opportunity for students to learn about a professional career as web developers and ICT teachers. Those workshops were useful for the girls to discuss how to make a choice about their careers, how to get ready for successful employment, and also see some examples of work, shared by the women professionals.
During the event, girls could also test the new activity created by Sisters of Code team in Scratch, which is available for students and teaches through a game how to understand symbols of hand movement in traditional Khmer dances performed by Apsaras.
Sisters of Code goal is to encourage girls and young women to pursue tech education and inspire them to work in the tech industry. We hope that this event could help to create a new opportunity and bring more inspiration to students!
