In just 2 weeks’ time, Sisters of Code program has received 181 applications to join its 18 weeks long coding program for free thanks to the support from IT Academy STEP , Women International Group in Cambodia and the award received from Solve - MIT. Only 34 students can be accepted to join the program in February on IT Academy STEP Cambodia campus and the selection process included motivational interviews and interest to study technology. Only 1 out of 5 applicants is invited to join the program, which was a very difficult decision for the Sisters of Code team.
We would like to congratulate the selected students, who will be personally contacted for the further steps to register and start our studies with the internationally awarded educational program to learn coding, game development, and website creation, as well as will receive training in presentations and personal consultation for the future career path.
This year Sisters of Code program received 16% applications from students age 10 to 14 and 84% from students from 15 to 21 y.o., thus showing that the interest in coding mostly starts at the high school years. 55% of applications received were from public schools and 1st-year university students, who have mentioned that joining Sisters of Code would give them a unique opportunity to improve coding skills. Only 9% of the applicants did not have any previous experience in using computers, which demonstrates that students in Phnom Penh would generally have access to computers. 52% mentioned that they use a computer for studies mostly, while 23% use them also for entertainment and 22% for communication. As we can see, that e-learning approach which was introduced in Cambodia due to COVID-19, brought some changes in the pattern of using computers and most students already know that a computer can be a great tool for learning. These facts make us think, that the program will take place smoothly by giving students great opportunities to improve their skills and meet new friends in a supportive environment.
2 groups of Sisters of Code program will study in IT Academy STEP campus, while 1 more group in NGS Sisowath High School. Trainers for both groups are female teachers, with a computer science education and great experience in teaching Sisters of Code program.
Inspired by the current mentorship program with Solve - MIT, Sisters of Code team is working on further initiatives to give more opportunities to female students in Cambodia wishing to learn technology, so follow our news!
